Short version: 604 pages, if you’re holding the Madinah-style Arabic muṣḥaf that most people use. But stopping there would be a bit misleading. There are 114 surahs, 30 juz, and 6,236 verses by the usual count. As for how long it takes to get through it, well, that’s a “depends who’s reading” kind of answer. Your Arabic matters, so does your speed, and so does whether you’re taking your time with tajweed.
How Long Is the Quran in Pages, Words, Verses, and Reading Time?
How Many Pages Are in the Quran?

604, in the Madinah-style muṣḥaf. When a teacher says “try ten pages a day,” this is the book they’re picturing.
Your copy might be different, though. Publishers pick their own page size, script, font, line spacing, margins, and layout, and none of them have to match. Got an Arabic-English edition? It’ll be far thicker, since the translation takes up room next to every passage.
So when you hear “604,” read it as “604 in the usual Arabic layout.” It’s not a promise about every Quran ever printed.
Why Do Some Qurans Have More or Fewer Than 604 Pages?
Compare two copies and you’ll probably find the last page numbers don’t agree. Nothing’s wrong with either one.
Large print eats up more paper than a pocket edition. Some Qurans have translation or commentary under the Arabic and some don’t, and Indo-Pak printings often set the text out in a different way from the Madinah style.
The Quran itself stays exactly the same. Same novel, tiny type at 350 pages or big type at 500. Nobody would say the author snuck in 150 extra pages.
That’s why I’d keep page count for planning and nothing else. It says a lot about the book in your hands and not much about how much text there really is.
How Many Surahs Are in the Quran?
- Al-Fatihah first, An-Nas last, and Quran.com’s surah index lists them all if you want to look.
Here’s the catch: they’re nowhere near the same size. Al-Fatihah has seven verses, and the surah right after it, Al-Baqarah, has 286. Further along, some surahs are so short you could read several of them before you’d finish one page of a long chapter.
So “a surah a day” sounds neat but doesn’t hold up. One day takes two minutes, the next takes your whole evening. The surah count tells you how the Quran is laid out. It can’t tell you how long you’ll be reading.
What Is the Longest Surah in the Quran?
Al-Baqarah, with 286 verses by the numbering in Quran.com’s surah index.
If you’ve spent most of your time in the short surahs at the end, it’s a surprise. And it doesn’t stick to one subject: faith, worship, family matters, earlier communities, fasting, money, plus a lot from the history of revelation.
It’s also why “finish one surah today” isn’t a good goal when you’re starting out. Pages, verses, or a slice of a juz work better. At least you’ll know what you’ve signed up for.
What Is the Shortest Surah in the Quran?
Al-Kawthar, or at least it’s one of the shortest by verse count. It’s Surah 108, with three ayahs, per Quran.com’s chapter listing.
Three! Put that next to Al-Baqarah’s 286 and you can see why counting by surah doesn’t tell you much. Ten short surahs from Juz Amma are a completely different workload from ten early in the Quran.
If you want steady days, plan by pages or by part of a juz. The chapters can be as uneven as they like and your reading load won’t change.
How Many Verses Are in the Quran?
6,236. If you’re only going to hold onto one verse number, make it this one. Most widely circulated editions today follow it.
You might come across some others in books or on the internet. And yes, it must seem strange having some figures differ from the others, but it all comes down to what point marks the start and what – the end of one ayah as compared to another. The lines have been drawn slightly differently in a number of cases. That’s how the text is subdivided and numbered.
One tradition splits a passage into two verses, another leaves it as one. The words are the same either way.
Why Are There Different Quran Verse Counts?
Verse numbers weren’t invented to make different versions of the Quran.
Early scholars had set ways of identifying where verses end, and in a few places those ways disagreed about whether something was one verse or more. The total goes up or down by a little. Words don’t get added or lost.
Picture writing the same paragraph as four sentences instead of three because you punctuated it differently. Same paragraph.
Use 6,236 as your reference if you need one, but it’s not the only way verses have ever been counted. And most of the time you can just follow the numbers printed in your own Quran.
Is the Quran Really 6,666 Verses Long?
You’ve probably come across 6,666. People love it because it looks tidy, and it comes up a lot in casual conversation. But it isn’t what you get if you count the numbered ayahs in the widely used arrangement, which is 6,236.
If you’ve seen both numbers, don’t worry that there are two Qurans. There aren’t. Go with the numbering in the muṣḥaf you read.
This is actually a perfect example of a situation in which one needs to verify their information on the Quran through its text. A verified reference beats a number you half remember hearing.
How Many Words Are in the Quran?
About 77,400 Arabic words, though 77,430 turns up often as well.
You would expect word counting to be simple. Not quite so. Arabic tacks particles and other grammatical elements right onto the end of words, and computer programs cannot decide what to do about them. One program leaves the conjunction tacked on to the following word while another strips it off.
The text hasn’t changed. For a sense of the Quran’s length, “around 77,400 words” is the honest way to put it. One exact figure would only be fair if every counting method gave the same answer, which they don’t.
What About the Number of Letters in the Quran?
Some websites give very exact letter counts. I’d trust those a lot less than the surah count.
What a “letter” is depends on what you decide to count. Quranic spelling has quirks that make computer counting messy (it isn’t a “character count” button). Some methods handle certain written forms one way, others another way, and digital text can store marks as separate characters.
This is one cool piece of trivia information. However, it doesn’t assist you in determining how much time it will take to study or recite it. This information is easily determined by the pages, juz, surahs, and the reading time required for it. You don’t have to know about the letter count before establishing a habit.
How Many Juz Are in the Quran?
Surahs are lopsided, but juz are much closer to even, so they’re far better for planning. Quran.com has a separate reading section for each one, Juz 30 included. If you want to finish in a set time, the math is pretty gentle. One juz a day takes about 30 days. Half a juz takes about 60, and a quarter takes about 120.
None of those are religious requirements. They’re just schedules. If you’re still building fluency, don’t push yourself into a juz a day. A small amount, read carefully and regularly, beats a huge goal you drop quietly in the second week.

How Long Is One Juz of the Quran?
In a 604-page Quran, a juz comes to roughly 20 pages.
Say you read four pages after each of the five daily prayers. That’s about 20 by bedtime. Whether it takes you 40 minutes or two hours depends on your fluency. Someone confident might fly through it. Someone still learning letter combinations, vowel marks, pronunciation, or tajweed will take longer, and that’s completely fine.
Beginners, I’d count minutes instead of juz. Start with 10 or 15 focused minutes a day, then let the pages grow as reading gets easier.
If you feel that you could use some help along the way, then perhaps you should give Iqra’s Quran Reading a try.
How Long Does It Take to Read the Entire Quran?
There’s no one answer, because people read at such different speeds. Say you’ve got a 604-page muṣḥaf. At 2 minutes a page you’re looking at about 20 hours. At 3 minutes a page, about 30. At 5, around 50, and at 10 minutes a page, about 100 hours.
Those are just calculations, not goals. If you stop to fix your pronunciation, it’ll take longer. If you’re reading something familiar, it’ll go faster. Either one is fine.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged reciting the Quran and never made easy reading a condition for reward. Sahih Muslim 798a says that the person who struggles while reciting and finds it hard receives two rewards.

Can You Finish the Quran in 60 Days?
Yes, and for plenty of people it’s a better fit than 30.
That’s half a juz a day, around 10 pages in a 604-page edition. Far less scary. If you work full-time, study, have children, or are learning Arabic from the very beginning, it’s much easier to keep up than a 30-day plan.
Ten pages still too much? Cut it down. Seriously. The Quran shouldn’t turn into another thing you’re always behind on.
If you’re an adult coming back after years away, Iqra’s programs for adult learners give you a structured path without assuming you already read fluently.
How Long Would Five Pages a Day Take?
604 ÷ 5 is about 121 days, so roughly four months for a standard 604-page Quran.
Five pages are sufficient for you to feel that you’re making some progress without taking over your whole day. If you still find reading Arabic challenging, then five pages may take some time at the moment. In a few months from now, however, five pages will not be difficult.
Counting pages can keep you motivated, which is great. Just don’t let the number hide the question that matters more: are you reading carefully enough to keep improving?
And if sounding out the words is still a struggle, regular sessions with one of Iqra’s Quran teachers can catch pronunciation and reading problems that are hard to hear in yourself.
